Every kennel is a bit different and may have different rules, but here are some general guidelines and best practices.
Choose a Date/Time
Reach out to the FB admins in the group to add your event so that all local wankers will be invited. The web geek will also add the even to our IEH3 calendar for those who don’t want to participate in the FB junk.
A good starting bar should have:
- Room for us
- Stays open until around 10-11pm
- Food
- Drink specials or just cheap drinks
- Safe and well lit parking
- An area for good, safe hashing…not including shiggy, that should be relished
- Dog friendly bar if your trail starts at a bar and you want hashers to bring their dogs
If you’re starting in a park then make sure to bring vessels or remind people to bring their own.
Choose a Co-Hare
If it’s your first time haring a hash/bash, you should pair up with at least one experienced IEH3 hare. There’s a lot that goes into haring. They will be responsible for showing you the ropes and making sure you don’t fuck up too badly.
You can certainly lay a trail with one hare, but it is a lot more fun with two (like most things) and you can lay a more challenging live trail with less stress.
Plan/Scout Your Trail
Every hare has their own method for planning/scouting trail, but pre-planning will pay off in less stress for you and hopefully more fun for the pack.
Types of Trails
Type | Trail Ends |
A-A | Exactly where it started |
A-A’ | Within 1/2 mile of the start |
A-B | Over 1/2 mile from the start |
Buy Refreshments and Supplies
IEH3 has no full time volunteer Foodmeister or Beermeister so it is the hares’ responsibility to buy everything that will be consumed on trail/on-in. Ask the kennel if we have left over beer from a previous hash, we sometimes do!
Beer | Buy enough that there is at least a beer for every hasher. Buy cheap beer; this ain’t no garden party. Buy in bulk or on sale, but we normally don’t get too many on a trail so 24 beers/cider and some water should be enough. |
Wine | Up to the hare if they want to add a cheap box for those who turn their noses up when yellow beer is presented. |
Water | Buy enough water to cover people that aren’t drinking beer. More water tends to get drank in the summer months. No one knows why. |
Ice | Enough to ensure that the beer and water are cold before the pack arrives at BN. |
Brown Bags | You’re welcome to spend more to leave awesome brown bags on trail, but the hares cover the cost. |
Chalk & Flour | Have enough to mark trail. If you forget, others might have some you can use as long as you ask nicely and give good hugs. |
Write out chalk talk
Find a place near the bar or start location, out of the way of foot and car traffic, to write out all the marks that will be included on your trail.
Inform whoever is leading chalk talk of any special marks and explain what they mean.
Lay Trail
As with planning/scouting, an entire guide can be written on specifics of laying trail. Below are things to consider specifically for laying an LBH trail.
- You MUST be able to leave when “Hares Away!” is called
- Lay trail using white or yellow chalk or flour.
- 3 marks after any check is On-On.
- 1 mark after a whichy-way is On-On.
- Brown Bags and fishhooks are encouraged, but not required.
- Hares often have less of a head(!) start after BN. Plan accordingly or be snared!
- Use marks to slow down the FRBs and keep the pack together the best you can.
- Pre-laying is allowed, but prepare to be called out for it if people notice!
